Abilities:

Going through the rift changes, but does not end, Dracula's need to sleep in his native soil. Now, though, the soil of New York City will work, as a substitute for the soil of Wallachia in his home world.

Immortality: As long as he has a fresh blood supply (it need not be human blood, though mammalian is greatly preferred), Dracula can remain eternally young, though he does, at times, allow himself to grow older in appearance, depending on circumstances. He is very difficult to kill, but not impossible. A wooden weapon can fatally wound him. He can be killed by fire, if his body is completely destroyed. It is also possible for direct sunlight to kill Dracula. However, sunlight will only kill him, if he is previously weakened by either injury or lack of sleep. Otherwise he is greatly weakened by the sun's rays, but not killed.

Transformation: Dracula has the ability to take many forms, including the shapes of animals, dust motes, and mist. Given the smallest of cracks, he can pass through walls and other barriers that would keep in or out even tiny insects. Some of his favorite forms are wolves, bats, and mist. However, Dracula can only transform at night. Once the sun rises, Dracula is trapped in whatever form he is currently in.

Strength: Dracula is much stronger than ordinary humans. He normally has the strength of twenty to thirty strong men. He is also much faster than humans.

Weather: Dracula is able to control the weather to some degree. At night, he can summon storms, fog, and mist or make these things clear up. However, he can not do this when the sun is up.

Telepathy/hypnosis: Dracula is a strong hypnotist. He can overcome almost all minds, provided they make eye contact with him. He has limited telepathic ability with the person under his control, once he or she is hypnotized. However, Dracula's telepathy is much stronger with those he has shared blood with, particularly those who have drank his blood. For those he has bonded with in this way, Dracula can communicate directly mind to mind, at great distances. The hypnosis and telepathy do give Dracula a certain amount of control of the other person, especially if they have weak wills.

Magic: Dracula has some ability with magic, though he is very far from being a great sorcerer. One of his strengths is sympathetic magic. Using part of an item or person, such has hair or fibers, he can magically track movement and location. Magic, however, is his weakest skill. He does know some spells and can be summoned, using a sample of his hair, a candle, a mirror, and a secret incantation.

Other: Garlic and symbols of faith are not effective weapons against him. Dracula is perfectly capable of wearing a cross or attending a church, if he so chooses. He still considers himself a Catholic, regarding the sacraments and symbols with reverence. In order to enter the domicile of another person, Dracula must first receive an invitation. He also can not be seen in any reflective surface, so must be careful of mirrors and the like, if he wants to avoid detection.

Appearance: Though considered very tall, when he was alive, Dracula now appears to be a man of medium height, with an average build. He has dark brown eyes. Dracula's hair can be anything from dark brown to silver, depending on what age he chooses to appear and how regularly he is feeding. He is handsome, though his personality can make him downright compelling, at times. Dracula's eyes tend to glow red, when he is very angry. He has a sensual mouth. Generally, Dracula's teeth are normal in appearance, but he does have fangs, when he is feeding.

Dracula is a wealthy man, so he tends to dress well, in dark clothing. Born royalty, he has a very commanding presence, carrying himself erect, with great confidence. He does not, however, have a very great attachment to material items.

Dracula's English is a bit formal, sounding rather European. His manners are very polished, even courtly. He speaks well, but not usually very softly. When Dracula does speak in a soft, quiet voice, it is a sign of rage, the kind that leads to killing.

Personality:

Dracula is highly intelligent and very well-educated. He's had centuries to devote to literature and study. He's a brilliant strategist, with much first hand experience of warfare and leading armies. He has a great deal of respect for both art and science.Dracula holds life, generally, in high regard, but won't hesitate to kill an enemy. Dracula remains a Catholic, with firm belief in Christianity.

Dracula is an honorable gentleman, but he can be very proud and ill-tempered. He is capable of both great kindness and great cruelty, depending on who he is dealing with. He prefers to be honest, though he will lie, if it's necessary for his safety or the safety of someone he loves. Once he makes a promise though, he keeps it, period. This is central to how he perceives and defines himself.

Though a vampire, Dracula still sees himself as human, considering vampires a subset of the human race. Much of Dracula's focus and drive is based on fitting in, as a vampire, into the human world and society. He has a deep need to remain connected to humanity. Though he can be private and even remote, Dracula needs other people, surrounding himself with friends, lovers, and adopting Mina's descendants as family.

History:

Dracula was born in 1431 to the prince of Wallachia, Vlad the second. He spent most of his childhood as a hostage to the Ottoman empire, for his father's loyalty. As an adult, he was continually at war with the Ottoman Empire, fighting for the Christian faith and to keep Wallachia a sovereign state. He converted from Eastern Orthodox to Catholicism in 1475. As a breathing adult, Vlad became involved in a bitter feud with his younger, sadistic brother, Radu the Beautiful. Dracula was killed in 1476 by traitors, but he didn't stay dead. Instead, he became a vampire.

In May of 1891, Dracula met Jonathan Harker, who came to Castle Dracula on business. He was there to assist Dracula with purchasing property in England. Sadly, due to mistakes on both sides, the visit did not go well. Harker consistently misinterpreted Dracula's intentions (often literally, when language was involved) and Dracula failed to understand the effect he was having on Harker and that Harker's polite refusal to ask probing questions did not mean explanations weren't needed.

Once the gentlemen were both in England, events transpired mostly as recorded in Bram Stoker's novel, but Lucy and Mina were both willing lovers to the attractive Dracula, with Mina truly loving him. Unfortunately, Dracula's actions brought the attention of Van Helsing, who hunted vampires from bigotry. After causing the death of Lucy, through blood transfusions, Van Helsing convinced the others to hunt Dracula. In order to protect Mina from Van Helsing and to avoid Dracula having to kill Jonathan Harker in self defense, Mina and Dracula worked together to fake his death.

Over a century later, Dracula recorded his version of the events in Stoker's novel, using the tape recorder of Arthur Harker, Mina and Jonathan's great-grandson. He caused a snow storm to trap their car and held them as a captive audience, though neither suffered any permanent damage.

In 1979, Dracula was magically summoned to Chicago by a spell entrusted by Mina Harker to her grand-daughter, Clarissa. Clarissa was living in Chicago, with her son, Andrew Southerland, his wife, and their three children: Kate, John, and Judy. Kate had been killed and John had been kidnapped, with his pinkie fingers torn off and sent to his family. Dracula intervened on behalf of Mina's family, especially when he realized that their enemies were in fact seeking to battle him. Kate had, in fact, been turned into a vampire, but the process was reversed later.

Following these events, Dracula continued to grow closer to Mina's descendants and their spouses, especially Joe Keogh, Kate's boyfriend and later husband. The American descendants of Jonathan and Mina called their vampire friend Uncle Matthew or Uncle Matt, due to his frequently used alias of Matthew Maule. Dracula and his new family continued to protect and aid each other against other vampires, including Radu and Caesar Borgia, and other threats, including a self-styled crocodile god called Sorbek.
